80-90% packet loss on Linux VM

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 in VBox 4.3.6 with Windows 7 as the host. The network between the two is NAT'd. When I ping out from my VM to the network, I get about 80-90% packet loss. Doing the same from the host does not result in the same problem -- that works fine, as does pinging the VM from the host. Has anyone encountered this before?

I've tried the following so far with little-to-no luck:

• Generating a new MAC address
  Switching drivers from paravirtual to Intel
  Switched from NAT to Bridged mode (this helped, but did not eliminate the problem)

Update:

Discovered that the problem only occurs when trying to reach HQ servers, which are across the country. Locally, everything pings fine. Switched back to bridged mode, actually seems to have resolved it after all. Main problem solved.

So here's the less pressing problem that still remains: When I ping from the host, it runs exactly as expected: replies display quickly and in a decent time (86 ms, not bad for our WAN link). Here's the weird part: When I ping from my Linux VM, the replies come back in the same 86 miliseconds that they do in Windows, but the display of each reply is delayed by about 6 seconds each time.

Does anyone know why the display of the response is so delayed?
