USB 2.0 WLAN Network Adaptor

Post by XxFAMOUSxX19 »

Hi, my host OS is Windows 7 Ultimate and I'm using VirtualBox to run BackTrack 5 r3 on my LAPTOP. I went out and bought an external USB 2.0 Wireless Network Adaptor because I know you cannot use your built in wlan NIC. I installed the drivers and the wlan adaptor is working fine inside of Windows. When I booted up BackTrack i bridged the connection to the wlan network adaptor and went to devices -> usb ->and added a filter for my adaptor. Windows makes the noise of a usb being disconnected and I verify that because my windows machine is no longer picking up wi-fi signals from my usb adaptor. The problem is, is that the light on my wlan adaptor stops flashing as soon as I activate it in BackTrack and doesn't work. I later found out that VirtualBox needs an extension package in order to enable USB 2.0. So, I uninstalled the latest version of VirtualBox (4.3.6) and installed the last compatible version of virtualbox with the extension pack (4.2.20). I have been trying for hours to figure this out and it seems as nothing I do changes anything. If i bridge it to my ethernet cable connection and then try and use my usb wlan device in usb, nothing. No matter what, when I type the command airmon-ng, no interface, driver, or anything pops up. One bit of information I can give is when I bridge my connection to a directly connected ethernet cable plugged into my laptop, my VirtualBox is able to access the internet without any problems. As soon as I bridge it to the wlan adaptor, it says it can't obtain an IP address and connection failed (and yet again, no available wi-fi networks).

Not true. Links for VirtualBox 4.3.6 and its extension pack are on the Downloads page. You'll have to look more carefully. Try that combination and let us know what happens.
