VirtualBox does not 'see' my USB-DVD drive

Hello,
I created an empty VM of 20Gb on my iMac (Mavericks).
Then I put the XP installation disk in my USB-connected DVD drive (iMac has no more in-built CD/DVD drive).
But the opening screen that wants me to indicate the CD does not 'see' the CD,
while Finder, Terminal and MuCommander can see it and read it.
I had to Force Quit VB in order to get it stopped.
Now I only get "FATAL: no bootable medium found, system halted".
How to get any further?

The easiest way is to launch Disk Utility and create a new iso image from the CD. Then instead of your actual CD, point VirtualBox to use the iso file that you just created.

Hi Socratis,
that is an interesting solution; never thought of that.
Another idea that came to my mind is: could I install VB on my old XP machine,
which has an inbuilt DVD drive, create a virtual machine and install (my other) XP in there,
and than move that VB-file to my iMac?
I would like to go for two options, as I also have to install SP3 and other things from CD's.

Sure, you could try it, but I don't know what kind of hardware your old XP has. You could also try another solution; trying using USB filters for your CD. As I said, the iso creation is the easiest.

Well, a new development: Diskutil 'sees' my CD, but there is no option to create an iso.
I clicked 'New Image' and now it is creating a .dmg
Is that wrong?

Btw., VB can 'start' the created empty system, but I don't get a chance to direct it to any image.
It just says "no bootable device".

- Go to VM Settings -> System -> Motherboard -> Boot order : Move the CD/DVD to the top.
- Go to VM Settings -> Storage, select your CD device and on the right side (Attributes) click on the CD-like icon and select your iso file.
- Reboot your VM and it should boot from the "CD drive".

That did it! Thanks a lot.
Btw.: because I was unsure about that .dmg file I created an ISO file on my XP system.
Anyway, it is installed now.
The only thing that remains is how to get additional files into my virtual windows.
Can it see parts of my OSX disk or does it see USB sticks?

Go to VirtualBox -> Help -> Contents... (it will open the user manual) -> Chapter 4.3 Shared folders
