Probably a common network question

Hi guys,

I appreciate this has probably been answered times before and i've missing something extremely simple, done a search on google and here on virtualbox forums but not found the answer i'm looking for, quite possibly my search words!

Anyway, my requirement is to run virtualbox on my Mac Book Pro with a linux install guest machine, i want the guest machine to be defined with a static IP address so i can ping this virtual machine from the host.

I've installed virtualbox 4.3.6 and built an openSUSE guest on Mac OS X 10.9.1 and this runs fine. I have configured my virtual machine to use Bridged Adapter on the ethernet card and unchecked the 'Cable Connected' check box.

Within the VM i have defined a static IP address of 192.168.1.100 on a subnet of 255.255.255.0....i can ping this within the VM and i get a response, however if i ping 192.168.1.100 from my Mac OS X host, i get

Code: Select all

PING 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
However if i connect the host machine via the ethernet connection to my network i get a response.

This is ok i guess when i'm working local, however i want this set up for when i travel, i thought unchecking the box for 'Cable Connected' would allow me to run my host and VM in this fashion.

Thanks in advance

Glen

Then use host-only which does not require a network connection. Add a second adapter set to NAT if you want/need the Internet in the guest.

Thanks Perryg,

I'll give this a blast when I get home this evening.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Glen

Yep we're all good and up and running!

Thanks Perryg for the pointer, done a little more digging around the net today based on your info and found some good stuff. Anyone else having this same requirement might find the following blog useful and thanks to Christopher Maier for sharing the info.
