Error: "Delayed Write Failed" (VirtualBox > 4.1.18)

Post by ribi85 »

(Windows - Datenverlust beim schreiben)

setup:

host: Win 7
client: Win XP

i'm using mozilla firefox and thunderbird in both my host and my client. i want to use the same profile folders for both programms in my host and my client, so i always have the same bookmarks, saved passwords, etc in firefox on my host and client and the same filters, adressbook, etc. in thunderbird in both my host and client. therefore i added a network share in virtualbox sharing both the firefox and thunderbird folder and i changed the content of my %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles.ini file on my client to:

Code: Select all

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=0
Path=D:\Eigene Dateien\Dokumente\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\firefoxprofilefolder
and the content of the file %appdata%\Thunderbird\profiles.ini on my client to:

Code: Select all

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=0
Path=D:\Eigene Dateien\Dokumente\Mozilla\Thunderbird\Profiles\thunderbirdprofilefolder
with D:\ being the network share.

problem:

this setup worked fine with virtualbox 4.1.18. i first had a problem with a few 4.2.x-versions. i havent tried all but with the ones i tried i always got the error "Windows - Datenverlust beim schreiben" (should be "Delayed Write Failed" in english) after closing firefox or thunderbird. it's still not fixed in the latest virtualbox version 4.3.6, so i thought it might be a bug in versions > 4.1.18 ?

i found out that this problem occured with linux hosts and samba shares. in that case its a windows problem with the solution being this hotfix:

support . microsoft . com/kb/321733/en

but i guess this doesnt apply to me...

my event logs says:

does anyone know what i have to do to get rid of this problem, or do i have to downgrade to virtualbox 4.1.18?

The Virtualbox shared folders are not designed to be used as data paths for programs.
It is a very simplified filesystem which doesn't implement many advanced features which are often needed if you want to do more than simple file transfers/copies.

too bad, especially since it used to work in earlier versions...

for anyone else who has the same problem:
you could downgrade to version 4.1.18 or create a windows network share, instead of a virtualbox share. i did the latter, which is kind of annoying since you have to create a network between the host and the client and create user accounts with passwords and you have to deal with windows' users rights and file permissions management so that only your virtual box client can access your sensitive data and not anyone else in your network.
