Installation of Ubuntu, Mint, and Crunchbang failed

Post by greggraham »

I have successfully set up Ubuntu Linux in VirtualBox at work on my Windows 8 (64-bit) host, but it failed at home on my Windows 8.1 (64-bit) host. It goes through the installation fine, boots into the installed OS, and allows me to login, but then I get a crash in Ubuntu with the title, "check_gl_texture_size crashed with SIGSEGV in__dubsin()" See attachment Vbox-ubuntu.zip.

So, I tried with Mint Linux, and it crashed after reboot. See attachment Vbox-mint.zip.

I tried Arch Linux, and it succeeded to the basic installation, which has no GUI, but I have not brought it up to a GUI installation yet. That requires more work than I am ready for at this time.

Finally, I tried Crunchbang. Again I went through the installation, but I got a Guru Meditation from VirtualBox after reboot, which suggested I consult the forums. See attachment Vbox.zip.

I'm wondering if there is something wrong with my host video configuration. I'm running a home-built computer with an i5-3570 using Intel integrated graphics on an ASUS P8B75-M/CSM motherboard, in case that's relevant.

One other thing: on my work installation, when I create a new virtual machine, on the Create Virtual Machine dialog box version drop-down menu, I get choices for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu and other Linuxes, but at home I only get "Ubuntu", etc. I believe they are the same version of VirtualBox since I downloaded them within a day of each other. My home version is 4.3.6 r91406.

That's all of the info I can think to provide; please ask if you need anything else, and thanks in advance for your help.

1) 64-bit guests need hardware-virtualzation enabled in the hosts bios.
2) when creating the 64-bit guest you must select 64-bit in General -> Basic -> version.
3) If running Windows as host you must make sure hyper-v or xp mode is not enabled on the host. MS does not play well and wants it all.

Enabling hardware-virtualization has appeared to fix my problem with Ubuntu, even though I am using a 32-bit guest install. It also caused 64-bit options to appear in the Create Virtual Machine dialog box. My Crunchbang VM is still causing a Guru Meditation, but that's ok for now if Ubuntu works. Thank you very much!

Why don't you just post the log file ( as an attachment )?
