can't get virtualbox to install as x64 on my x64 OS

I have Win 8.1 x64 installed onto my laptop with virtualization enabled in the BIOS. I've triple checked that my OS is indeed x64 and that virtualisation is indeed enabled in the BIOS. I've scoured the BIOS and there are NO other settings applicable on this machine.
Each time I install VirtualBox (after a cold boot), I do not see a choice of x64 OS's in the 'Version' drop down menu when creating a 'New' VM...... I only see the standard x86 OS's. When I attempt to install one of my x64 servers, I naturally get an error that I don't have a capable x64 platform (the platform being my VirtualBox disk).
I can't seem to find anyone in this forum with the same problem. I've just downloaded and installed the latest VirtualBox: 4.3.6 r91406
This version installed just fine on my other x64 capable Win 8.1 desktop machine...... go figure. But I really need to get the VM's setup on my laptop so they're transportable. Is there a command line install I can do to force a x64 installation? Just a thought.
Help? Thanks
