VM won't start: error initializing kernel driver

Post by myvb »

When I first installed VB I loved it. Having used VMware and Parallels betas, I loved the idea of an open source VM. Also, it was very fast and easy to use. However whenever I start any virtual machine, whether linux or windows, I get the following error:

Unknown error initializing kernel driver (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).
VBox status code: -1 (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).

Result Code:
0x80004005
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45}

I've uninstalled VB and reinstalled it multiple times only to get the same error. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am using version 1.3.99 beta1.

I also just now redownloaded and installed this version only to get the same result.

When installing, as before, sometimes I get a message that says there were errors during installation. When doing a custom install and deselecting the kernal install, there were NO installation errors. When installing just the kernal there WERE errors.

I also uninstalled VB using the command line uninstaller then repeated the various installations above only to receive the same kernel initialization error.

Not sure what else to do.

Hi.
I have exactly the same problem.
I have been told that it's a UID or GID problem, anything to do with NetInfo Manager?

Still having the same problem with 1.4 beta2. I even uninstalled beta1 before installing beta2. I've narrowed it down to a problem with the kernel installation. Wonder if VMware is affecting this.

I've given up on trying to solve this myself. When OS 10.5 comes out (in a couple of months) I will do a clean install and try VirtualBox again then.

BUMP!

Hey, I installed the latest edition of VirtualBox last night on my OS X machine and I'm experiencing the same error.

I figured I'd bump this thread instead of starting a whole new one.

Has anybody found a possible fix? Or can we expect a fix in the next release?

I just got an IMac and this is happening to me too. Is it an Intel problem? Does it only work on PowerPCs right now?

VT-x is not available

Post by rliasari »

Hi...
I'm a new user of VB on Mac OS X. I installed Windows OS on my Virtual Machine. It was OK and there's no problem. But, unfortunately today I can not start my VM...there's a message such as below:

------------------
VT-x is not available. (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {e3c6d4a1-a935-47ca-b16d-f9e9c496e53e}
-------------------

It will be really appreciate if there is someone here who could explain what the problem is, and also give me some help to resolve it.

Thank you a lot in advance.

Try unselecting VT-x/AMD-V in the advanced tab of the VM settings dialog.

Thank you

Thank you! The Windows-VM could work again after I unselected the VT-x/AMD-v on the General (preferences).

Hmm. Nice try but... Virtual machine WON'T run in 64bit mode (in my case i tried OS type: Windows7 (64bit) ) without selected VT-x/AMD-V

Well, you need VT-x or AMD-V for 64 bits guests. That is clearly documented.
