Base System installation failed

Post by failed leyline »

I am very new to virtual machines and am currently working on installing Ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.iso in virtualbox. i followed the steps i found but when installing the base system the install fails and i can't figure out why or how to look up the error message as to why the install failed. Attached are screenshots of the error message i have received.

The attachment didn't make it but you can always say what the error is. One thing. Make sure that pae is enabled in the guest settings.

the error was this:

Warning: failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg --forve-depends--install /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.11.1-0ubuntu7.8_i386.deb

the second error was:

the debootstrap program exited with an error (return vaule 1)
check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for the details.

What is the host?
Did you do what the message told you to do ( check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for the details. )?

Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.
Also, the error doesn't seem to involve VirtualBox, but if you follow the instructions above and send us the zipped log files from your host, we'll have a clearer picture.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Open the VBox main manager and right click on the guest. Then select to show log. Save the log and post as an attachment.

The error messages you reported indicate an issue with the guest, not the host or VirtualBox. Have you or did you actually install this guest? I see where you are saving the state and not actually shutting down the server, which might lead to some of your issues.

Also your version of VirtualBox is kind of old and you might want to update it as well as the choice for your server guest. 10.04 is really old. I would suggest 12.04 myself.

Your first hurdle then will be to get the guest properly installed. Personally I would start over since it will be faster to just install again then trying to figure out what you did.

When setting up new install leave everything set as default with one exception. PAE needs to be enabled.
Question, did your instructor give you specific settings they wanted you to follow?

Edit: Did your instructor also give you the guest pre-setup?

Would you mind trying to attach the file one more time? The first time it didn't make it...
