Installing Windows XP on Ubuntu Gutsy fails

Post by nomorewin »

Hi,

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 and Virtualbox 1.5.0_OSE.

I'm trying to install Windows XP SP1 on a VM. Everything goes fine (boots up, finds the partition, starts installation...) until I'm asked to key in the CD key. Every time I type the key and click 'Next' I get ERROR "The CD Key you entered is not valid"

This happens wether I install from the CD or from an iso file extracted from the same CD.
.
I'm using a valid CD key. I know that for a fact because I've installed Windows from this disk on several machines. And it's a genuine key.

I suspect that it could be a problem with the keyboard. And because of this suspicion I've also tried to copy and paste the key from a text file (on ubuntu) to see if I could bypass the typing but, unfortunately, the copy and paste can't be performed until I install Guest Additions, which I can't do until I have the VM up and running, which can't happen unless I can finish the windows installation :(

So.... I need help. I'd be very greatful if somebody could lend me a hand on this.

"the cd key you entered is not valid

I have exactly the same problem. Using a known virgin copy of XP, the install goes fine, including entering the 25 character product key but then giving the "The CD key you entered is not valid".
Any Solution?
