Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager has stopped working

Post by phoenix1 »

Hello,

I'm having some problems with VirtualBox ever since I upgraded to the latest version - 4.3.6 (r91406).
It seems that each time I try to browse for files (be that attaching a VHD, ISO, etc), VirtualBox stops responding.
Same thing happens when I try to view preferences (File-Preferences).
I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro.

I've tried to uninstall and re-install but that doesn't work.

Here's are sample entries from Windows Reliability Monitor, all displaying the same error:
Faulting application name: VirtualBox.exe, version: 4.3.6.0, time stamp: 0x52b1cfd5
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.16408, time stamp: 0x523d45f1

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

Faulting package-relative application ID:

I'd appreciate any help!

P.S: I have another computer (running the same OS) that displays the same behavior.

Have a look in VirtualBox.xml to see if there's any duff previous paths in there. Re-installing will not help this.

Hey,

Thanks for replying.
I've actually tried to delete everything in there but that didn't help.
However, upon deleting all the files once more, I've looked into "VBoxSVC" and the last lines states:
00:00:00.084965 main Executable: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.exe
00:00:00.084965 main Process ID: 4140
00:00:00.084965 main Package type: WINDOWS_32BITS_GENERIC
00:00:00.167365 usbLibDevStrDrEntryGet: DeviceIoControl 1 fail winEr (31)
00:00:00.268077 VDInit finished
Perhaps this could be a clue as to why VB stops working?

Hard to say. I don't recognize the error nor know why VBox would be interested in anything usb at that point. It could be a total red herring. If not then it's possible that VirtualBox is logging an error reported by the host (i.e. not actually generating it), in which case the cause would be a buggy USB driver you've installed on the host. It would be for a device that isn't a mass storage device (those use native Windows drivers), but can act like one sometimes.

Tried to uninstall and delete any registry value I can find, but that doesn't help.
I don't see anything suspicious in Device Manager, even when I choose to show hidden devices (for the ones I've installed but are not connected at the moment).

Perhaps something is interfering with Virtualbox as I have found no reports from other users.
The only thing this computer and the second one (which both are showing said error) have in common is that SpiderOak is installed.
I've tried to quit the application (without uninstalling) but that didn't help.
