Callee RC: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005)

Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with all patches
VirtualBox 4.3.4

I have shortcuts on the desktop for starting my regular VMs. Often, when I start the VirtualBox GUI or a VM using a shortcut I get:
Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object.
The application will now terminate.
Callee RC: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005)

If I close the error message and then immediately try the action again (the VirutalBox GUI or the VM shortcut) it works fine.

I thought I might be double clicking on something but their is only one instance of virtualbox.exe running when the error message is displayed.

Any idea as to what might be causing it?
