Black screen no 3D acceleration for Ubuntu 13.10
Using a Windows 7 host, when I enable 3d acceleration for my Ubuntu 13.10 guest, the 2 screens are black. I can switch to the consoles alt+F1-6. I have read other posts about disabling frame buffering in ccsm, all my drivers and app versions are up to date. See screenshot for xsession errors too. I also have Ubuntu auto-login as me so maybe it's a permissions issue that I read somewhere else?

OpenGL Warning: crServerSetupOutputRedirectEntry failed!
First thing I would do is make sure you hosts video drivers are the latest version.

Yep, my Nvidia Quadro 4000 has the latest drivers.Perryg wrote:OpenGL Warning: crServerSetupOutputRedirectEntry failed!

So I was experimenting with the display modes (including seamless mode) and at one point I got my display to show up with Ubuntu prompting me whether I wanted to reboot or not. I got excited and cancelled, opened up a couple of terminals, dragged and shaked them around the screen to see how the performance was, then went to fullscreen mode when everything went black again. Unfortunately I cannot recall the magic sequence of events that got me there, but at least there is hope.
When my session auto-locks, I get the password prompt screen in glorious color, but it all turns black again when I login.

One issue could be the auto-login. If the user logs in before the guest additions drivers are loaded it can cause you problems. Disable the auto-login and see if that helps.

Yep, I disabled auto-login. The login screen shows up fine, but like when my session times out and I have to login with my password, black screen.Perryg wrote:One issue could be the auto-login. Any other log files or debugging options I should be looking for?

I need to see the /var/log/xorg.0.log and the /var/log/vboxadd-install.log from the guest.

Re: Black screen no 3D acceleration for Ubuntu 13.10
VirtualBox is seeing the drivers shown below.
nVidia support lists version 331.82 as the latest drivers
This is your error as shown in the log
This usually has to do with the host side code and why it is important to make sure you have the latest drivers.
Other than that I don't see any issue in any of the log files you have posted. If the drivers are in fact the latest you will need to post a ticket at bugtracker

I have the same problem
my default-display-manager is lightdm
when I /etc/init.d/lightdm start I get ...
from /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log ...
Loading extension GLX
(EE) module ABI major version (13) doesn't match the server's version (14)
...
Fatal Server error:
(EE) no screens found
from /var/log/Xorg.0.log ...
(EE) Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
...
(EE) VESA(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (3) Input/Output error
...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
/var/log/vboxadd-install.log does not show any signs of errors while building vboxvideo.ko

Re: Black screen no 3D acceleration for Ubuntu 13.10
Seems like VBox 4.2.18 doesn't like my Xorg 1.14.1 that comes in Kubuntu 13.10 ...
from here this lead https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159884
I created /usr/share/X11/Xsession.d/05-ignoreabi.conf with:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnoreABI" "1"
EndSection
and my VM is back ... phew
