The setup is:
- VirtualBox 4.3.6 r91406 (latest as of as of 2013-Dec-20)
- OS X Maverick host (all available (as of 2013-Dec-20) updates applied)
- Win8.1 client (all updates applied)
Trying to install the QlikView desktop application (It's an awesome business Intelligence/data visualisation tool, free for personal use from www.qliktech.com (registration required)).
The installer however fails and shows a dialog box with "Windows Installer" in the caption, and a text of
"This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor."
I have tried various CPU configurations in VirtualBox, but no luck. QlikView (=QV) does some pretty advanced stuff under the hoods to get maximum performance out of the hardware it is running
on, so it might be that QV relies on something not (yet) implemented in VB... That's just a theory though.
Anyone else that have seen similar problems?
Ideas on what possible solutions there might be?

Does your VM meets the system requirements? The processor type maybe a red herring and you may have graphics card or RAM issues.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Re: Win8.1 on OS X Maverick host: Cannot install win softwar
Well it turned out to be a mix of different things causing this:
The VirtualBox image started off as a WinXP image (32 bit), which was upgraded to Win 8. I was under the impression that I moved to a 64 bit Win8 installation (as I chose not to keep any data or config from the WinXP setup).
Then upgraded to Win8.1.
BUT looking closer it turns out that the Win8.1 client running in VirtualBox is indeed a 32 bit one...
After changing the client type to Win8.1 (rather than Win8.1 64 bit) and enabling PAE in the virtual machine, I could actually install the 32 bit version of QlikView. I had to use the compatibility mode in Win8.1 to install QV, but that's fine.
All in all, QV Desktop is now running fine in VirtualBox. Only downside is that I'll be limited to available memory in QV (this will limit what data sets can be analysed).
Case closed.
