um ok, i searched for 'enable backports in repo debian' and got a thread that says to put this in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sources.list:

deb backports debian org/debian-backports wheezy-backports main
deb-src backports debian org/debian-backports wheezy-backports main
(wont let me put links yet)

but there wasnt a sources.list so i tried to create one and the folder is write protected. i went into terminal and wrote

sudo chown root /apt/etc/sources.list.d

it asked me for my password i entered it and then it didnt say anything but went ahead as if it worked, but it still wont let me change anything inside the folder. If i cant get root using chown then what else can i do?

Better be glad it didn't let you change the permissions or you would be in a mess.

Use sudo nano or sudo gedit if you are not in a shell.

when i save the file and it asks what to name it i put

/apt/etc/sources.list.d/sources.list

and it asks me if i want to save the buffer, i select yes, then it asks if i want to rename the file, i say yes, it says error writing "/apt/etc/sources.list.d/source.list" no such file or directory. thats for nano, it says theres no such command as gedit.

You don't want to rename anything. You just need to edit and save the file. nano uses ctrl+o to write out the file , just hit enter again, then ctrl+x to exit.

That worked it allowed me to write the file, i put one line:

deb backports http://debian.org/debian-backports wheezy-backports main

and then i saved and in terminal wrote:

sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

and it gave me:

Reading package lists....ERROR!
E: malformed line 1 in sources list /etc/spt/sources.list.d/sources.list (URI Parse)
E: the list of sources could not be read.
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

So now what? The link there is from the debian backports instruction page.

These kind of questions should be asked in the Debian forums. We try to provide minimal help but do not support the OS specific questions.

Dont worry about it, virtualbox is garbageware. No one should ever have to jump through these sort of hoops just to be able to move files between vm and host. VMware its one click and i have access. Its fricking debian 7, its not like some weird niche os or something.

No it's not some weird niche OS, but evidently you don't know how to use it. You are probably better off with vmware.

I am currently running Debian 7.3 in VirtualBox with no issues. Versions 5 and 6 worked fine as well.
