Kali guest hangs after login 50% of the time

Post by wreckwriter »

Hey guys, need some help if anyone has time. Host is Windows 7, all updates. Guest is Kali 1.05, all updates. Using Vbox 4.3.4 r91027. Guest additions are installed (latest version). Everything is 32 bit.

When booting guest, everything appears normal, boot scroll shows no errors and it boots promptly to login screen. After logging in it will either boot properly (approx 25% of the time), hang at the login screen wallpaper (approx 25% of the time), or go to the main system wallpaper, with desktop icons but no application menus (approx 50% of the time). In either of the 2 error conditions any attempt to use the machine menu (reset, shutdown, power off) with result in a not responding condition and task manager will be required to kill it.

I've tried changing everything in the settings that it will let me change but it just keeps doing the same thing. This also happened with Linux Mint guest which I finally replaced with Kali to try and get around the problem.

Additional note- Shutdown also hangs frequently. Last message "Will Now Halt". When it works correctly there is one further message "Power Off".

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Guest is basically unusable at this point. Log attached.

You have selected 32-bit for the guest

Code: Select all

00:00:00.628740 Guest OS type: 'Debian'
You are over committing the amount of RAM

Code: Select all

00:00:00.606199 Host RAM: 3327MB total, 1497MB available
00:00:00.691489 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000065a00000 (1 704 984 576, 1 626 MB)
This is only needed for 64-bit guests

Code: Select all

00:00:00.691570 IOAPIC <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)

Thank you! How much do you suggest? Kali lists bare minimum as 512.

It's always the more the better but you should try to not commit more than 50% of the available RAM. Plus fixing the other issues of course.

I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand. The only other thing you mentioned was that 32 bit was selected for the guest. It was installed from a 32 bit iso.... Sorry if I missed something obvious.

Since you only have 2 total I would. You can try but the extra resources with limited amount available is probably what is causing your issues.

So far so good. Have started and stopped 3 times successfully since changes. Thank you so very much for your time Perry!
