I cannot start a purchased VM on a Windows XP machine. The product (Mercedes Benz WIS) was purchased "... preinstalled on a virtual Windows 7 machine ...". The uncompressed .vbox file will not get past "Windows is loading file". On a Windows XP laptop (HP L2000 AMD CPU family 15 model 36 stepping 2) it loops that message twice and returns to the Virtual Box boot logo and repeats. This same file (wis20121.vbox) will boot from an external drive attached to a Windows 7 machine (MacBook Pro).
The log file from the Windows XP machine is attached.

Re: VM "Windows is loading files" loop
You don't have enough available host RAM to run this VM. Try reducing the allocation to 512MB. It's also a single core CPU, so performance will not be as good as a dual core or better can manage. Your CPU also doesn't support AMD-v.VBox.log wrote: 00:00:02.459472 Host RAM: 1406MB total, 984MB available
...
00:00:02.746404 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000040000000 (1 073 741 824, 1 024 MB)
...
00:00:02.747232 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000001200000 (18 874 368, 18 MB)
If you paid someone for this VM then it seems to me that you should be entitled to tech support from them. I'm afraid it doesn't get you anything extra here.
Re: VM "Windows is loading files" loop
I understand your reply confirms the older HP / AMD hardware is inadequate.
This VM runs OK on a test machine (MacBook Pro quad core Windows 7 machine with 8 GB RAM). VirtualBox settings: Base memory is 2048 MB and Operating System is Windows 7 (64 Bit) to match the host machine.
Any suggestions for a new computer to run VirtualBox appreciated. Recommended specifications preferred but if you have favorite brand and model (laptop) I'd like to know. Thanks for your attention and support. I look forward to learning more about VirtualBox, it's pretty cool.

Re: VM "Windows is loading files" loop
I have no favorite brands, though I prefer not to go out on a limb, hence I think Intel is safer than AMD. Apart from that it's just a matter of ensuring plenty of resources to run multiple OS on the same hardware. That means lots of RAM and disk space, multiple cores, and VT-x of course.
Re: VM "Windows is loading files" loop
Yep, Intel and more of everything! This MacBook is running an Intel i7 with 8GB RAM and it's struggling. Shutdown of the VM forced 101 updates to Windows 7 and it's been running 4-5 hours. Is this actually doing anything to the VM?
