VirtualBox since 4.2.18: Win7 x64 Host Appcrash in ntdll.dll

Post by chrissyan »

Hello!

Maybe someone of you has a good idea how to trace down a problem with the latest versions of VBox:
I'm still using VBox 4.2.16 since all later releases including the 4.3.x series crash immediately in ntdll.dll after launching the VBox GUI:
Exception code: c0000005
Exception offset: 00000000000508c5
Someone else here reported to have a similar crash with a virtual networking adapter. I don't have that. I'm using a built in Realtek NW card. I tried updating its device drivers for Realtek as well as the Asmedia and Intel USB 3.0 drivers without success. I also disabled the devices, no success.

Updating from 4.2.16 to any newer version always crashes VBox, downgrading back to 4.2.16 immediately brings VBox back - Linux and Windows XP and Windows 7 guests - all no problem. It also doesn't matter whether the Extension Pack is installed or not. Clean install also doesn't help.

It happens on two nearly identical systems based on Asus P8-Z77V-LE, latest BIOS with Core i7 3770 and onboard HD4000 graphics. RAM:16GB, system is on SSD, Intel RAID is on.

For VBox 4.3.4 I tried to start VirtualBox.exe in Compatibility Mode (Windows 2008) and the GUI came up. But then I wanted to install the Extension Pack: In this case it crashes in VBoxExtPackHelperApp.exe, same exception code and address in ntdll.dll.

Is there any chance to trace down what causes the crash in ntdll.dll?

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards
Chris

If this a reproducible scenario, I would find a similar ticket or open a new one on the BugTracker with the installation logs of 4.2.x & 4.3.x, as well as the full log of the Appcrash.

Problem solved:
According to another post such AppCrashes in ntdll.dll are usually related to a system driver or service.
With the built-in msconfig tool I could trace down the problem to a Logitech driver for the webcam called LVPrcS64, "Process Monitor".
Mine is located in c:\program files\common files\logishrd\lvmvfm\LVPrcSrv.exe and is built in February 2007.
Disabling this service in the service manager is sufficient to avoid VirtualBox from crashing. I don't know which side effects are caused by disabling this device driver. However, the webcam is still working and much more important - VirtualBox again.
Maybe the tip with the msconfig tool helps someone else with similar problems.

Kind regards,
Chris

Interesting. The deal with Logitech webcams is that all but the oldest ones are UVC (USB Video Class) compatible devices and do not require device-specific drivers. However, Logitech does provide such drivers. It's not entirely clear what value those drivers add.
