Ubuntu freeze during startup

Post by Svero »

I cloned an Ubuntu vm from a windows 8 Desktop and copied it to a windows 7 (x64 in both cases) build on a Macbook Pro.

I created a new virtual machine on the macbook using the vdi of the cloned machine, but I'm unable to start Ubuntu (anywhere past the grub screen).

I've tried all kinds of tweaks to the settings with no luck .
I'm using VB 4.3.4

Any help would be appreciated..

The log file ends with...

1) Are you running Windows7 as a host OS on a MacBook Pro?
2) Why did you clone just the .vdi and not the settings of the VM as well (the .vbox file)?
3) Do you have access to the original Ubuntu VM? Especially to its .vbox file?
4) Partial logs are not enough I'm afraid. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Yes.. it's a dual boot machine -- osx & win7 using bootcamp

2) Why did you clone just the .vdi and not the settings of the VM as well (the .vbox file)?

I tried it both ways

3) Do you have access to the original Ubuntu VM? Especially to its .vbox file?

Yes. I still have it. The settings are the same.. pretty vanilla stuff really. Almost default for everything except mem and vid mem. The only change is less memory on the laptop, but still plenty to run linux. Giving it around 2gig... 4gig on the desktop since it has ram to spare.

4)

Change the guest Settings | Basic | Version to 'Ubuntu-64'.

That did it. Thanks! So dumb and obvious.. Somehow the settings listbox always ended at Ubuntu and I never thought to scroll... sigh.
