virtual differencing hard disk settings

Post by g.kissjov »

Hello Everybody,

I am deploying a test lab with the sunde diana VDI solution. It is based on oracle virtualbox version 4.2.8

I want to install on the guests Windows7. On guest XP everything is working smoothly but on Win7

the disk activity is much higher and it runs a bit slow because of that (i've checked the date in the task manager and the CPUs and RAM on the server

are not fully occupied but the disk activity is).

I've checked this option called "virtual Differencing Hard Disk Settings"

http://www.sundenc.com/support/download ... tting.html

In the upper link is a document published by sunde which explains how to achieve a special function.

The idea is to have 1 virtual disk for the OS +basic programs (golden image) and the rest information should be stored in snapshots.

I've done everything according the installation guide but the problem is that the snapshor folder path cannot be changed.

I want to put the golden image (the vdi disk file from which all virtual machines will load the os) on SSD and the snapshots on

raid0 but unfortunatelly after i perform the instructions described within this document the snapshots are automatically put in the same

folder where the golden image is located. So my questions are:

1. How can i use this function-"differencial disk images" but locating the golden image on logical drive 1(ssd for example) and the snapshots on logical drive B.

2. Do you have any other idea how can i optimize the performance of the system. In this case the disk activity is the bottleneck. The XP guest needs much less IOps

and for this reason everything runs smoothly there.

Thank you in advance!

I think you want linked clones rather than snapshots.

Will that improve the performance of the VM's.

Currently it takes too much time to load the Win7 OS of the Virtual Machnie.

I would like to speed this process. Do you have any idea how can i make the Win7 virtual machines to load and work faster?

No. Why would snapshots or linked clones improve performance?

You have not backed up your assertion of slowness with any kind of concrete numbers, but slow loads are often the result of network configuration errors. Also Windows simply sometimes is slow the first few times it boots up. If you want to discuss this issue further then I suggest you start a new topic (one topic, one question), and also provide the necessary diagnostics as described in Minimum information needed for assistance.
