How to start SQL*Plus?

running VirtualBox 4.3.2 on OS X 10.9
running the current Linux appliance and Oracle 11g release 2 (from Developer Days)
everything works very well

I would much appreciate keystoke-for-keystroke instructions on starting sqlplus. I assume the command line in the terminal window ( [oracle@localhost ~]$ ) is the starting point, but I'm not even sure.

My goal is to be able to import an entire 10g user (lots of data, tons of stored procedures) using Oracle's import facility, which I believe is managed from sqlplus. That will be a separate challenge. (SQL Developer is nice, but not an option here because it can't import CLOBs.)
