SUN RAY OPERATING SOFTWARE 11

Post by sekar hindusthan »

I am having Sun Fire X 4200 Server and Sun Thinclient 170 Machines. Now those are functioning with Redhat EL 5 and SRSS 4.0 in good condition except the following problems

1. On Windows (Through Terminal Server - rdesktop) I cant execute C / C++ Graphics programs.

2. Directly I cant have Windows Installed on the Server.

I have the following doubts someone please help me.

1. How can I Install Windows Directly on the SUN Server.

2. Is any SUN Ray Server software available for Windows.

3. Can I use Any other Servers like HP / IBM instead of SUN Fire X 4200 to connect with Sun Ray Thinclients.

4. Why should I need Oracle Sun Ray Operating Software 11 and what is the use of it.

5. What is the premium membership option available to download Sunray Operating Software.

Please help on this...

This probably is the wrong forum, but I can help out a little since I have some experience with Sun Rays.
1. On Windows (Through Terminal Server - rdesktop) I cant execute C / C++ Graphics programs.
I am not sure what you mean there. I do that sort of thing regularly.
2. Directly I cant have Windows Installed on the Server.
That is probably true.
1. How can I Install Windows Directly on the SUN Server.
See above. You probably cannot.
2. Is any SUN Ray Server software available for Windows.
Not at all. It is available for Solaris and some variants of Linux. SRSS has been set to End Of Life status and sadly is no longer being developed. There was the jOpenRay (I think) project that tried to perform SRSS functions purely through Java. In theory, it can run on any system that supports Java. I have zero experience with the software, so I could be wrong.
3. Can I use Any other Servers like HP / IBM instead of SUN Fire X 4200 to connect with Sun Ray Thinclients.
Yes. I am typing this into a Sun Ray 2FS connected to an HP DL585 server running Solaris.
4. Why should I need Oracle Sun Ray Operating Software 11 and what is the use of it.
I am not sure I follow you. There is the Solaris 11 Operating System which is an OS for servers. There is Sun Ray Server Software (SRSS), last at version 5.4-ish. This is what communicates with the thin clients. There was also firmware for the thin clients themselves, called something like Sun Ray Operating System. I do not know the version numbers. Oracle only started restricting those firmware images around SRSS v5.2 or so, so any earlier version of SRSS will have the firmware.
5. What is the premium membership option available to download Sunray Operating Software.
That's probably only for the restricted version of the later firmwares. Use an earlier firmware and you will be fine.
