Hello,
After update from Virtualbox 4.2.18 to 4.3.4:
In a Windows 7 guest, I try to attach 2 different USB thumbdrives.
For one of them, it works. For the other, it doesn't.
Windows gives this error message: 'This device cannot start (code 10)'
I had no such problem with this device in the same guest and Virtualbox 4.2.18

Are you sure that specific device worked before the update?
Perhaps it's a USB3 device. VirtualBox doesn't support USB3 - but nor did it do so before the update.
Otherwise I'm not aware of any relevant change in USB support.

Yes.mpack wrote:Are you sure that specific device worked before the update?.
It is USB2. There is only one partition (fat), with msdos partition table -- like the one that works.mpack wrote:Perhaps it's a USB3 device. VirtualBox doesn't support USB3 - but nor did it do so before the update.

And it still works in my Windows XP guest.
The problem may come from the Windows 7 guest.

Re: [4.3] USB thumdrive problem in Windows guest
Well, the strange thing is that "code 10" AFAIK refers to a missing USB application driver. I assume you're aware that USB is organized into layers, with generic USB hardware layers at the bottom, application specific device drivers at the top - e.g. if it was a camera, the top layer would provide the proper functionality of a camera. Code 10 AFAIK means that the app level drivers are not installed. The puzzling factor is that the app drivers for simple thumb drives (mass storage drivers) are native to Windows from XP onwards (and maybe before, I never used Win2k). You have ruled out USB3, so is there anything else non-standard about the drive? E.g. special software bundled by WD, drive encryption etc?

The drive does not have anything special as far as I know. If I remember correctly, I had reformatted it before use.
It does have PortableApps software, but this has always worked in both my windows XP and 7 guests
-- and it still does in my windows XP guest.

Re: [4.3] USB thumdrive problem in Windows guest
I created a new windows 7 virtual machine (with a different ISO) -- with Virtualbox 4.3.6.
The USB thumbdrive which failed to mount now works as expected.
