Hello,

I am trying to install VB on a Windows 2008 VPS.

I don't own this machine, it is from a hosting company but it appears I have complete control over it.

The machine has 41 GB HD.
Dual 2 GHZ 6C AMD.
2GB RAM
Windows NT 6.1 OS SP1

I know that the RAM is not alot but I believe it to be dynamic.

If I try and install VB It tells me the Network Feature will disconnect me from the internet (which it does), but my server brings up a box that says something like "lost connection retrying".

It tries 20 times (about 10 minutes) but never reconnects (to finish the install I assume).

If I disable Bridged Networking and Host-Only Networking by selecting "entire feature will be unavailable" during the install, I wont get the connection retrying problem and VB appears to install.

I right click on the app in Windows Explorer and running as administrator.

I get a pop-up box: cannot access the kernel driver.

After that I get a box with this message:

I've installed 4.3.4 and when that was giving the errors, uninstalled it and then installed 4.2.20. Same problems.

The most popular fix seems to be right-clicking on the two files in the Oracle directory and installing them but that is not fixing the problem.

I see the small windows pop up rapidly and disappear when performing a right-click-install.

Make sure you use "Run as admin" when you install VirtualBox. Also, allow it to install network drivers. When the installation appears to stall, look on the notification area of the taskbar to see if there's a network icon hunting for a connection. If yes then hover the mouse over it to see if this represents the VirtualBox Host-only virtual ethernet adapter, if yes then right click the icon and disable it. You should find that the VBox installer then immediately completes. You can then find the host only aapter in "Device Manager" and re-enable it prior to running VirtualBox. This gives you a fully function VirtualBox.

I don't know why this step is required, but simply always has been required (for me) ever since I first started using VirtualBox.

I dont get anything in the notification bar.

Even if I did, the box that pops up that says "Connection has been lost. Attempting to connect to your session" takes control of the screen.

I have to hit cancel or wait for it to continue.

If I click "cancel" it will close my remote desktop connection to the VPS and I have to relogin in.

If you normally get a network activity icon on your taskbar, the VBox one should appear there.

The "connection has been lost" message sounds like it comes from some application, not from the OS. It's probably best not to have other apps running (particularly if they need the network) while VBox is being installed.

Everything is a toss when installing VirtualBox nested. That's the reason it is not supported. You hit a catch 22 here in regards to the network. It must disable the host side network for a few seconds to install the network stack. This causes you to loose connection with the guest. Not a lot you can do about it either. Add to that you will only be able to run 32-bit guests and not that many at 2GB total memory.

Nested? Does VPS refer to a VM platform? It's not a name I've seen before, I assumed the name was just a local variant on VPN.

VPS = VirtualPrivateServer

It guess it shows you that people should be careful about using acronyms.
