I have in the past used VirtualPC (as it was supplied with windows) but this no longer available in Win8.x so can I use VirtualBox in a similar way so I can set up both an XP virtual drive and a LInux virtual drive. If so where can I get some straight forward instructions to completing this.

You could start by reading the VirtualBox Manual.
But VirtualPC functionality is still in Windows 8, it is now called "Hyper-V"
