Can a host system run a Windows 8 VM when hardware can not?

I am running an older, but still quick system. I benchmarked it for compatibility with Windows 8. Something to do with a secure boot feature Windows 8 utilizes. I am about to start school for sys admin and part of the schooling revolves around Windows 8.
So my question is "Can a host system run a Windows 8 VM when it's hardware can not?"

Doubtful. The guest depends on the host to have the capabilities to run the OS.

Secure boot? I think Win8 should run fine with any basic BIOS.

I suspect that in this case it will boil down to the hardware virtualization capability of the host. If you are talking about Win 8.1 as the guest it is definitely required. However I confess I can't think of a mobo which would run 8.1 as a guest which would not run it as a host.
