i am trying to run a program that only works in xp in windows 7 i ran virtual pc
ive found virtual box but keeps getting stuck on select start up disk and whatever I do I cant get it going please help

I'm afraid that a rather more precise description of your problem will be required.

What are you trying to do? Let's guess that you're trying to create a new XP VM. Ok, so do you have an XP setup CD?

And what is the program that will not run in Win7? Or do I gather that you've moved on again to Win8 as your host OS?

im trying to run a xp vm on a windows 8 machine

I have a xp setup disk however the pc doesn't have a drive so I have it in a shared disk drive (I have checked it can see it ok)

the program is Pegasus opera 2 however it is an old version that wont work on anything later then xp

the windows 7 machine I have runs Pegasus opera through virtual pc

Just to make sure you understand: the virtual machine talks to a simulated CD drive which (in the VM recipe) can take data from either a physical host drive or with a CD image file (an ISO image).

Your description of a shared CD drive makes me wary. I would make an ISO-image of the physical CD, and I'd use that instead in the VM to install XP.

If you want to discuss this further then I will need a precise description of any error messages etc.
