Running dualboot Kubuntu in a Win 7 Virtual Box

Post by Leo9 »

I have created a virtual Kubuntu machine based on lifehacker's how-to-dual-boot-and-virtualize-the-same-partition-on-your-hard-drive. Grub executes when I start the virtual machine, but I am left with a blank black screen. Can someone please help me? Here is what I've tried so far.

I have two SATA drives with Win 7 installed on the 1st and Kubuntu 13.10 installed on the 2nd. Both are the 64 bit versions.

My Linux partitions, using gparted are

Model: ATA WDC WD10EFRX-68J (scsi)
Disk /dev/sdb: 1000GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B
Partition Table: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
3 1048kB 500GB 500GB extended
6 1049kB 8193MB 8191MB logical linux-swap(v1)
5 8193MB 500GB 492GB logical ext4
2 500GB 1000GB 500GB primary ext3

On windows, my linux disk is \\.\PhysicalDrive1 and shows up using vboxmanage listpartitions as

Number Type StartCHS EndCHS Size (MiB) Start (Sect)
6 0x82 0 /32 /33 996 /4 /32 7812 2048
5 0x83 996 /4 /33 1023/254/63 469124 16001024
2 0x83 1023/254/63 1023/254/63 476929 976768065

I created a grub boot.iso on Kubuntu and transferred it to a Win7 folder following the LifeHacker instructions. Please see the attached grub.cfg file that I used, in which I eliminated the Win 7 entry.

I then created a vdmk file in Win 7 using the command

VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename kubuntu.vmdk -rawdisk "\\.\PhysicalDrive1"

Finally, I created a new VirtualBox machine, Kubuntu, with the following steps:
  • 1. Name and Operation System: Name: Kubuntu, Type: Linux, Version: Ubuntu
    2. Memory Size: 512 MB (Recommended)
    3. Create Virtual Machine: Use an existing virtual hard drive file: kubuntu.vmdk
    4. I selected Settings and then Storage
    5. In the Storage Tree, I selected Controller: IDE , then the new CD/DVD icon next to it.
    6. A question dialog appeared asking "Would you like to choose a virtual CD/DVD disk to put in the drive?" and I clicked the Choose disk button
    7. I selected the grub boot.iso file that I had created on and copied from my Kubuntu system
When I start the virtual machine and right after I select Kubuntu from the grub menu, I notice that the following messages flash across the screen before it goes blank:

file /boot/grub/fonts/unicode.pf2 not found
no suitable video mode found
no video mode activated

I have also read the Virtualbox chapter 9 section on raw disks.

Thank you!
