Win8 VM won''t install IIS components

Hi
My Win8/64 VM refuses to turn on IIS features (Web Mgmt Tools and WWW Services).
I check the requisite boxes, but after attempting to apply changes it reports ' Windows couldn't complete the requested changes' and insists on a Restart which rolls back my selections.
I don't get helpful error messages and I don't know where to go to find them if they're logged.
It's hosted on Win7 Enterprise.
Any clues or suggestions?
