http access to guest on host-only network

I've set up a host-only network adapter and enabled it in my two guest, which are Linux (Oracle Enterprise 6.3) systems. Since my host, Mac OSX 10.8.5, was already behind a router and using 192.168.56.*, I had to change vboxnet0 to use 192.170.56.* in order to get this to work. To keep things stable I used static IP on the guests (as recommended by many web articles) The guests also have a NAT adapter for external access, which is working. I added the host names/ip to /etc/hosts on the guests and also on the Mac system.

I can ping between host/guest and between guest/guest both by ip address or host name. However, and this is my problem, I can't access through http using either ip address or hostname in either case. I need this to work to perform the actual test that I set this system up for. Help appreciated.

Check guests firewalls. OEL prohibits this by default.

If ping works but not HTTP, firewall like Perryg said.

Side advise : don't use 192.170.x.x, this is not a private IP and you might run into routing issues later without knowing it, especially if you start changing your setup and make it more complex.

Thanks for the help. I guess it was a firewall issue. I had done a 'service iptables stop; chkconfig iptables off; service iptables start' but it didn't seem to take effect until I rebooted. Well, I can't be sure because I also changed the IP addresses as advised to be private. However, it all appears to be working now.
