Unstable Ubuntu

Post by ChrisW_UK »

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 on VirtualBox 4.2.16 on Windows 7 x64 (GuestAdditions 4.2.16 is also installed). VirtualBox frequently crashes, causing also the host's graphics to crash (leaving me with a black screen, or weirdly, a black screen with just the start button visible - clicking on the start button doesn't do anything tho). This doesn't seem to happen as much with other Unix guests. I've tried various things, such as changing the amount of memory (and video memory) I give the guest, {en|dis}abling 3D graphics, and {en|dis}abling VT-x, all to no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on how to fix this? I've attached the logfile from the latest crash.

Thanks,
Chris

Actually we need to see the guests log file.

Oops, I assume you mean the one now attached! Since my initial post:
- I've upgraded to 4.3.2
- I've found that my Mint VM has the same issues...

Code: Select all

00:00:37.757878 Guest Additions information report: Version 4.2.16 r86992 '4.2.16_Ubuntu'
First upgrade the guest additions to 4.3.2

Then make sure that the 3D acceleration is enabled (guest must be shut down not saved state)

If still sluggish open the guests terminal run the following and post as an attachment:

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
Note mesa-utils needs to be installed for this to produce a reply.

Lastly this error

Code: Select all

00:02:27.702084 VM: Raising runtime error 'HostMemoryLow' (fFlags=0x2)
Must be addressed. Free up host memory.

I am now running 4.3.2. I've tried installing mesa-utils, and get the Critical Error / HostMemoryLow warnings before it even finishes installing. Log attached. I get the Critical Error regardless of the number (or lack of) other programs I have open.

Do you have GoogleApps of any kind installed on the host, and in particular does GoogleCrashHandler64.exe show in running services on the Windows host?

I don't have GoogleCrashHandler64.exe in running services, but I do have gupdate and gupdatem running as services and gnotify, GoogleCalendarSync and googledrivesync running as processes. Perhaps more pertinent to the bug report you linked to, I am running it all on a Toshiba laptop, so I might start disabling some of the Toshiba utilities...
