Loading vmdk in VMware Workstation

Environment: Windows 7 64 bits as host - Ubuntu 13.10 64 bits as guest - VirtualBox (VBox) 4.3.2 - VMware Workstation (VW) 10.0

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to load vmdk files generated by VBox into VMware Workstation without any issue as long as I load the "parent" vmdk, the one located in the same folder as .vbox and .vbox-prev files.

What is the most interesting thing to do is to load the last child: I've made several snapshots along the way and I'd like to create a VM inside VW with its last version, without losing the whole chain of snapshots created from the same parent.

Obviously, I cannot load the last vmdk snapshot. There should be a way to create inside Vbox a vmdk incorporating the whole chain of snapshots and parent. How can I do that?

VirtualBox can merge snapshots in its own native format (.vdi). VMWare has the ability it merge snapshots for vmdk. I would copy the complete set to VMWare and merge them there.

I tried to copy all the snapshots and the parent vmdk into a single folder and tried to create a VM under VMware Workstation (VW) using the original vmdk as virtual disk, but VW does not see the whole chain of snapshots. Nothing has changed in fact.

Snapshot chains are not intended to be portable between VM platforms. If you use snapshots then don't expect easy management: lack of portability will be the least of your troubles.

In any case, problems with VMWare are best explored on the VMWare forums.
