Windows XP SP3 Mouse loses clicks/hover/focus (VBoxManager)

I have a problem where the VBoxManager program stops recognizing mouse clicks / highlighting controls when they are moused over. (This also happens to the guest machine at the same time.) This happens with a few mouse clicks of the VirtualBox manager being opened / guest being used. The input focus stays on the control it was on, but buttons are impossible to click etc.

I've tried
  • uninstalling / reinstalling the current version of VirtualBox.
  • Installing an older version of VirtualBox
  • Disabling startup programs
  • Switching to a different user account on the same machine -didn't help.
No other program is having this problem. (I first encountered the problem shortly after the last Microsoft Patch Tuesday, but I don't think that's relevant).

I figure this machine has a setting or file that screws up the underlying GUI toolikit so that it doesn't handle the mouse correclty- but I don't know where to look for it. Can someone familiar with the host GUI suggest something I can try? It's rendered my VirtualBox install almost completely unusable.

Think I found the issue. Appears to be an incompatibility with Microsoft Intellitype 8.1 - although why the incompatibility appeared post a Microsoft update is beyond me.

Anyway, switching to a Logitech mouse and uninstalling the Microsoft Intellitype drivers solved the problem.
