vb stealing hd space

Hi. Whilst running newest vb on snow leopard, it appears that vb is consuming the hd space, but when i delete vb files, the hd is not gaining the space the deleted files should create. My previous installations never experienced this problem. It appears the vdi recognizes the space, but not the hd. Any ideas?

Can you give some examples? How do you delete the VBox files? Provide some more details...

Deleting files within vb, moving to trash, empty trash. Created the new machine with 125gb(150 hd) useing more than half of the hd with vb data. Emptying host trash was of no help.

That's your problem there. Within. You allocated 125 GB. VBox does not really care if you empty your trash in the host or if you duplicate your trash. It only cares about the space that the guest OS is asking for. If you want to retrieve "empty" space, look in the manual (at the --compact option) and follow the instructions appropriate to your guest. Be very careful and re-read the manual. Twice...

i may have realized my situation, correct me if im wrong. not installing the guest additions could be the culprit? this was never a problem before, and for the record, this problem occuring when deleting vb data within vb. when i add data to the vb, the host recognizes, however, when i delete the vb data within the vb, the host does not recover the allocated data. vb is lying. lol. thanks for your advice, shall i install the guest additions then? i believe in my previous vb exp.' i had.

The guest additions have nothing to do with disk space consumption on the host.

This subject crops up regularly from users of OS X hosts, basically they have a hidden folder where backup copies of their files are stored. Deleting the original file doesn't delete the backup (that being the nature of a backup). The cure is to learn how to drive OS X properly - the only relevance to VirtualBox is that it has unusually large and easily noticable files.
