VB installation issue

Post by driesmeyers »

When I am installing Virtual Box( latest version and other builds) the window of the installation wizard shows that 'this may take several minutes'.(check the image) But it doesn't change. I have waited for almost an hour and nothing happened. It's frustrating because my internet is down and when I cancel the installation nothing happens either. I have to reboot my computer to have internet again because the installation didn't finish properly. Can someone help me?

I'm running Windows 8.1

I have seen this issue when the host-only interface fails to install. I didn't figure out a way to solve the issue, but there is a workaround.
This issue is caused by the install failure of the host-only interface and/or the bridged filter. If you don't need them, simply remove them from the installation componenets, and Virtualbox should install.

When the installer seems to have stalled, look in the notification area of the Windows taskbar for a network icon hunting for a connection. If it's there, hover over it with the mouse cursor. If it says it's the Windows Host Only network adapter then right click it and disable it. The VirtualBox installer will immediately complete. Now go into Windows device manager and re-enable the host-only adapter. It should all work fine.

Obviously the adapter is not going to find a connection when no VMs are running (and there had better be no VMs running while you're still installing VBox!). I have had this problem with every VBox install since 2008, on every PC I use. I have no idea why the problem isn't reported more often. Perhaps it's just an XP host thang.

(p.s. I can't help but comment... what possessed you to use a Floyd-Steinberg dithered GIF as the image? It hurts my eyes! :( I'm sure both quality and size would have better as a 32bit full color PNG).
