Network Difficulties

Post by OldBill »

Have new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop running Win-8. Have Installed Virtual Box 4.12.18 then Win-Xp. Find that under Xp I cannot connect to anything, either internet or other computers on home network. system indicates "connected" but received packet count is 0. Try to access this OS from any other computer on network fails. Failures occurs on wi-fi and if Dell is hard connected to Ethernet

Network consists of Motorola Surfboard cable modem > Netgear52 router > Netgear 8-port hub, one Dell GX280 computer running Xp, one ASUS/Intel home-built computer running Vista Business, Brother network printer, network Archive hard-disk, etc.

Am convinced this is a configuration & settings problem as Dell connects when using W8 but not Virtual-Box. I am not failure with Virtual Box or networking in general so need help-suggestion, please.

If you want the vm to look like another machine on your home network, you will need to use bridged networking, not the default setting (NAT).

Shut down the vm, change the NIC setting so that it is bridged to the physical NIC in the host, then reboot the vm. If you have a DHCP server on the network it should get its network config from there and behave just like another machine on the LAN.
