Guest additions + speed

Post by Glod »

How do I get the guest additions running? I read the User Manual and it did not help. I looked in the VirtualBox disk image, applications folder, and searched my whole computer and could not find it. Do I do it in the guest OS (using Windows XP). Also, the guest OS runs very slow. Is there a way to speed it up? Thanks for the help!

They are additional applications and drivers for the guest, so yes - you install them inside the guest.

Are you quite certain that the user manual chapter entitled "4 Guest Additions", and in particular "4.2 Installing and Maintaining Guest Additions" told you nothing about installing the Guest Additions? The instructions seem quite straightforward to me, but perhaps you could say which part you didn't understand.

"The VirtualBox Guest Additions for all supported guest operating systems are provided as a single CD-ROM image file which is called VBoxGuestAdditions.iso. This image file is located in the installation directory of VirtualBox. To install the Guest Additions for a particular VM, you mount this ISO file in your VM as a virtual CD-ROM and install from there."

I did not find VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in any directory anywhere on my computer host OS or guest OS. The VirtualBox disk image does not contain the .iso nor does the applications folder. Am I looking in the wrong place? A search of my computer yielded no results.

It can be confusing, yes. Or it changed in reality and not in the documentation? Here's what you do: With your guest running, go to the "Devices" menu and select " Insert Guest Additions CDROM image... (Host-D)". A "CDROM" will be present in your Guest. Run the "VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe" if it doesn't start automatically with AutoRun...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

That worked! Thanks very much. Do you know how I can get it running to speed of the hardware specs I have? It is running very very slow.

You'll have to be more specific about what exact feature you think should work faster. And provide details of your VM.
