Sorry for the abrupt post earlier. Please look at the edited post:

I am trying to install VBox on MAC. I need to use it for IE 8 only.
The download and installation was smooth. File used: VirtualBox-4.3.2-90405-OSX.dmg
When I now try to install the Win XP with IE8 it gives me the errors below.

Couldnt find anything similar to this in the FAQs.

Thank you
_____________
A similar situation but somewhat different error messages:
Progress state: VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR
VBoxManage: error: Appliance import failed
VBoxManage: error: Could not create the clone medium '/Users/user/.ievms/IE8 - WinXP-disk1.vmdk'.
VBoxManage: error: VMDK: could not create new file '/Users/user/.ievms/IE8 - WinXP-disk1.vmdk' (VERR_ALREADY_EXISTS)
VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80bb0004), component Appliance, interface IAppliance
VBoxManage: error: Context: "int handleImportAppliance(HandlerArg*)" at line 779 of file VBoxManageAppliance.cpp

I'll try to become Hercule Poirot... That means I have more questions than answers ;). The first bold instance tells me that your imported VM is trying to look at a "hidden" (begins with a dot) folder in your home folder (is your username really "user"?).

The second highlighted instance is pretty clear. The file IS already there and can't be created/overwritten (permissions? do-not-overwrite-flag?). Maybe you tried to import the VM twice (at least)?

How did you get a hold of "appliance50-17"? Was it from Microsoft for testing purposes?

I'm downloading the XP-IE8 VM as I'm writing this to see what's going on (from http://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools#downloads, or to be more precise https://az412801.vo.msecnd.net/vhd/IEKitV1_Final/VirtualBox/OSX/IE8_XP/IE8.XP.For.MacVirtualBox.ova, 805 MB). I'll edit/update the post with more info when I try it...

A little more information on how exactly you tried to open this VM wouldn't hurt...

Dear CrownJ
Apologies if this is not the same as your issue and isnt helping you at all.

Dear Monsieur Poirot aka Socratis
Thank you for your response.
(Your grey cells are working just fine.)
I was not using "appliance 50-17" it was what CrownJ was using. I thought that it must be the same problem and hence added to the plea

Actually I followed the steps in this article: http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/04/internet ... ie-9-free/
I had used it for the first VBox installation I ever did and since that was successful I merely followed it again.

To answer your questions-
Yes I had uninstalled VBox sometime back. Either I did it clumsily or there is some problem with the uninstall file.
Trying to re-install it (Like the earlier post said used VirtualBox-4.3.2-90405-OSX.dmg).
I followed the installation with the following (on the terminal) and that is what gives me an error message:

curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | IEVMS_VERSIONS="8" bash

Is there anything that can be done.

Thank you
"user" ;-)

Hi EsBee,

Not to worry, hope the issue you're dealing with is resolved soon. As for not able to import the cs 50 appliance, I continue my search for a solution and hope that in the meantime someone will be able to help :)

This is for anyone else who gets stuck like me.
I finally got it.
All I had to do was figure out how to see hidden files and folders on Mac and then remove the .ievms folder and try the installation again.
(do remember to hide them again cos you don't want to mess with them by mistake)
It worked!

THANKS SOCRATIS

Now I just hope you figure your stuff soon as well.
