Do I need USB Filter?

So, having Linux is a necessity for me and without an internet connection I can't do what I need to do. With my new Win 8 UEFI, its a little harder to install Ubuntu so I figured with all this RAM and storage I'd just use VB. I have it up and running fine, the only thing is I cannot connect to the internet. I have built-in wifi on my host machine, but I guess that simply doesn't carry over. I downloaded the expansion pack like I saw a recommendation about, and plugged up a USB wi-fi dongle. It is still not being read in Ubuntu. I tried adding the adapter as a filter, that did not work, so I removed it, and at the bottom of the screen where there are VB options for the machine, i right click the USB option and select the wifi adapter. It flashes from red to green continuously and I'm not picking up any networks. So is this more simple somehow? I tried to add it in the settings as a USB filter, which I just thought that would add it on as being in use everytime the machine boots, but I must be lost on the filter option. Can anyone help me here? I have internal wifi, I have a wifi dongle, I have the expansion pack. Can anyone send me down a route to establish connection? thank you in advance.
EDIT: I apologize, I thought I posted this in Windows Hosts, not Windows Guests (can be moved if necessary). But, after a little while, I went back to the top to my connections and it finally displayed all of our networks, and I was able to connect to the primary. However now, after about 15 seconds, I am disconnected and it seems like it's trying to establish connection, but cannot. The light at the bottom on the USB is still flashing red and green.
