Ubuntu 13.10 guest mini-toolbar has black rectangle

Post by Karl Foley »

Host: HP Probook 4740s
RAM: 8GB
Video card 1: AMD Radeon HD 76500M (v8.982.6.0)
Video card 2: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (v8.982.6.0)
Virtual Box: v4.3.0 r89960
Vbox additions: v4.3.0 r89960
Guest: Ubuntu x64 13.10
Guest video ram: 128MB
3D enabled: Yes

The unity interface is working in 3D fine and video is all nice and smooth but the mini-toolbar has a black rectangle around it which remains when the toolbar minimises.

There should be newer video drivers available (they are listed in HP SoftPaq manager) but they won't download. I've been promised a link to the newer graphics drivers on Monday by HP so it will be interesting if these make a difference.

I've seen a few other users with this issue, but no fixes as yet:
I don't have invisible icons, just the black shadow.

Any thoughts please?

Sorry, forums would not let me attach screenshot.

Screenshot attached.
On the logon screen (which I assume is 2d only), everything is fine.

I've found you can turn the mini toolbar off in the VM settings - This is an acceptable work round for me.

I have the same problem with 13.10. I also sometimes get the disappearing minibar issue which is annoying. My host is Win 7 64bit with Intel Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA NVS 5200M. I have settled so far on moving the minibar to the top of the screen. Since the black box will cover my last line in full screen terminal.
