If I understand correctly, you may need to get a third party app (there are free ones) to change the resolution on your Retina Macbook.
I had been trying to get a CentOS guest running on a Retina MBP to use the higher resolution of the display without luck (Guest Additions was installed).
After installing QuickRes 3.2.2, I was able to set my resolution to 1920x1200 (along with other resolutions) and have the guest OS pick up on the change.

There is also something interesting going on with resolutions and speed. If I choose the HiDPI mode for any of the available resolutions, performance in the VM drops dramatically. For instance I can run 1920x1200 no problem with HiDPI off. However, the same resolution with HiDPI on (Im assuming this is the scaling that Retina does) will cause the VM performance to degrade significantly.

Hope this helps someone.
