VB4.3 stuck on loading screen after guest tools install

I did a clean guest install of ubuntu 12.04LTS 64bit on VB4.3.0 and then installed the guest tools but on rebooting it gets stuck on the ubuntu logo with the 5 red dots underneath. Host is Windows 7 64bit.

I tried installing it again through terminal, running:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-x11
but came into the same issue.

Any idea why this is happening and how I can get it to work?

don't use the guest additions from the public repos, they are not supported and their version will not match the virtualbox's ones.
Instead, use the guest additions ISO provided with the Virtualbox installation.

Awesome, that worked! I hadn't realised that the guest tools shipped with vb. I looked in the installation directory and there they were, just mounted the iso, installed and now it's all tickety-boo.

Cheers!

I also get stucked there too with VB4.3 and Oracle Linux 6.4 after I upgraded from 6.3 : When I rebooted it hanged at the startup when the last service start, just before before loading the graphical environment. I am lucky that I can login normally with ALT+2 and run maintenance commands, but I don't know what to do to correct the issue.
StartX is not starting and it says my vbox major version is 10 whereas my X-server version is 13. So apparently it's the guest additions I had from my old virtualbox 4.2 which is still being used and did not upgrade, and I have no idea how to upgrade it in console mode.

I have set the VBoxGuestAddition ISO file as CD for the virtualbox machine but how to make it visible by the system to be able to update my system? sorry if this is a rookie/noobie question.

Thanks!

Thanks for the hint Noteirak, this was also my problem.
I found how to install/upgrade the VirtualBox guest addtion ISO file), gnome now starts properly : here is what I did

1. Attach the ISO image to the Virtual Machine's CD drive:

Devices —> CD/DVD Devices —> Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file…

2. Login as root (password linux).

3. Mount the virtual CD drive:

mkdir /media/cdrom (if required)
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom

4. Change to the directory where the virtual CD is mounted:

cd /media/cdrom

5. Run the installer:

sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

6. When the installation is complete
it can take a while, even up to several minutes, re-boot the Virtual Machine.
