This cpu is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

Post by Hello1654 »

Just recently I did a fresh install of windows 8.1 Pro and reinstall all of my apps including Virtualbox but now when im trying to reinstall Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on Virtualbox I get this message
(Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this cpu is not compatible with 64-bit mode.)

So I took a look at the Manual and found this!
3.1.2. 64-bit guests
VirtualBox supports 64-bit guest operating systems, even on 32-bit host operating systems,[11] provided that the following conditions are met:
1. You need a 64-bit processor with hardware virtualization support (see Section 10.3, “Hardware vs. software virtualization”).
2. You must enable hardware virtualization for the particular VM for which you want 64-bit support; software virtualization is not supported for 64-bit VMs.
3. If you want to use 64-bit guest support on a 32-bit host operating system, you must also select a 64-bit operating system for the particular VM. Since supporting 64 bits on 32-bit hosts incurs additional overhead, VirtualBox only enables this support upon explicit request.
On 64-bit hosts (which typically come with hardware virtualization support), 64-bit guest operating systems are always supported regardless of settings, so you can simply install a 64-bit operating system in the guest.
Warning
On any host, you should enable the I/O APIC for virtual machines that you intend to use in 64-bit mode. This is especially true for 64-bit Windows VMs. See Section 3.3.2, “"Advanced" tab”. In addition, for 64-bit Windows guests, you should make sure that the VM uses the Intel networking device, since there is no 64-bit driver support for the AMD PCNet card; see Section 6.1, “Virtual networking hardware”.
I BELIVE IN THE PAST I HAVE INSTALLED 64bit VM'S
my processor doesn’t support Hardware Virtualization VT-d which it means that I cannot install 64bit OS in my Virtualbox Correct?? Correct me if I'm wrong!!

64-bit guests require you to have and it be enabled VT-x ( hardware virtualization )
This is done in the bios of the host. If it is enabled then check for something else using it like hyper-v

Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) ‡ is Enable on the Bios
Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) ‡ (Hardware Virtualization) is Not supported by my I7 2700k CPU

VT-d is not needed to run 64-bit guests.
Is hyper-V installed on the host?

I read on the Manual that (VT-d) needs to be supported on the CPU to run 64bit guest's.

No i have not installed Hyper-V

Well for those who do have this issue and are using VB 4.3.4 ... and didnt have this issue before it may be because 4.2.4 broke or has a bug when using VTx enabled in BIOS.

You would need to update your VB to 4.3.6
VirtualBox 4.3.6 (released 2013-12-18)

GUI: fixed warnings in VM settings / number of guest processors (bug #12480)
Main: don't automatically enable 64-bit guests on 64-bit hosts if VT-x/AMD-V is not available (bug #12424)
Main: always expose the DMI memory information to Windows 2012 guests (bug #12017) [/list]
