Invisible icons in Ubuntu 13.10 with 3d acceleration enabled

After installing guest additions and enabling 3d acceleration, icons in Activities -> Show Applications -> All become invisible. The icons are still there and can be run by randomly clicking in the black void. Right-clicking also finds a menu (if an icon is hit). Switching off 3d acceleration makes the icons viewable again (but Linux is just too slow without 3d acceleration).

Also the VBox toolbar casts a black shadow on hide when 3d is enabled. Works perfectly without 3d.

Environment Details - Host
Windows 7 (64-bit)
VirtualBox 4.3.0 r89960
16GB RAM

Environment Details - Guest
Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 (32-bit)
VirtualBox Guest Additions 4.3.0 r89960
1024MB RAM
128MB Display Memory

I tried to attach log file zip, but I kept getting this error:
Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.

The zip file is only 17 KB! I also have screen grabs of before and after 3d, but can't attach due to the above issue.

I have the exact same issue with the black box, but my icons are fine.
I'm running v4.3.0.

I wish I knew what was different about your system compared to mine.

I just updated to VBox 4.3.2 and nothing changed - no icons and black box under VBox toolbar.

Where did you get 4.3.2 from?
I've attached my screenshot.

I've found you can turn the mini toolbar off in the VM settings - This is an acceptable work round for me.
