I am trying to setup a Server 2008R2 with DNS & DHCP it's been dcpromo'd with a static 192.168.1.1 dns 127.0.0.1

The Win7 system is set to DHCP

VirtualBox as:

Server VM
Adapter 1 Internal Network name: intnet
Adapter type is the desktop network card
Promiscuous mode: Allow VMs (not sure if this is right)
Cable connected (Ticked)

Win7 VM
Adapter 1 Internal Network name: intnet

I have read some many articles about VBoxManage and enabling a DHCP server from there, however I want to test the functions of setting up scopes on a server.

Unfortunately I've not been able to get the two VM's to see each can anyone help with a screenshot guide or point me in the right direction. The Win7 will not see the Server to join the Domain!!!

I doubt that this really has anything to do with VirtualBox. My guess is that you have misconfigured DHCP. The DHCP needs to hand out the DC's LAN IP as the DNS setting. The guest needs to use the local DNS service to join the domain.

On the 2008 Server set the DNS IP address to point to itself (192.168.1.1). Do not use the 127.0.0.1 address.
On the Windows 7 virtual machine, configure it temporarily with the following settings:
IP Address 192.168.1.2
DNS Address: 192.168.1.1

Then, from the Windows 7 machine open a command prompt and type PING 192.168.1.1 (You may have to disable the firewall on both machines for this to work). If you receive ping replies then your problem is sure to be with the DHCP configuration on the server. Make sure the DHCP configuration is configured to give the client machine the address of the DNS server (192.168.1.1). Problems with client machines failing to join the domain is usually related to a DNS issues.

Let me know how you get on. It does work as I setup the same configuration some time ago. Don't forget to configure the Win 7 machine back to automatic addressing one you've figured out the cause of the problem.

Server ip configuration:
IPv4
IP adres & DNS is same 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.254
Install AD and DHCP
then add computer in AD ( client= win 7)

Check Client ip configuration
IPv4
ip adres 192.168.1.(2-253) subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.254 and DNS 192.168.1.1

then join Domain. should work!
