Keyboard issues with multiple guest OS's

All,
I'm having issues using keyboards with various guest OS's, be it Windows, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 13.04, etc., the keyboard is constantly 'breaking'.
What I mean is that the keyboard stops working, and requires hitting ESC twice, then the keyboard is working again.
It has become so prevalent, that with my current Ubuntu 13.04 guest, I have to hit ESCx2 between every instance of using the keyboard!
I'm using a "Dell USB Entry Keyboard", and Host OS of Ubuntu 12.04
I have posted a thread about keyboard locking issues before (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=57463) but never got anything resolved.
Any thoughts appreciated!
