Additions on Ubuntu Server

Post by Steevan »

Hi :)

I have this configuration :
- Windows 7
- VirtualBox 4.3.0 with Ubuntu Server 12.04 (or 13.10 i have tried this 2 versions)

When i want to install additions, i have the VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED error. I have followed a lot of tuto, who said to unmount cdrom, etc. But no one could help me, i still have the same error every time.
I have tried on Unbuntu Desktop, no problem, additions install is really easy and works fine. But i want an Ubuntu Server.

Somebody could help me please ?

Have you tried this solution?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

OK then, on a more serious note; Minimum information needed for assistance.

Ok, i didn't sent logs cause i thought it was not usefull in my case.

But here you have it, as attached to this post.

My Win7 is the 64 bits version, as the Ubuntu Server or Desktop i've installed.

"Media Locked" AFAIK typically means that the media is mounted in a saved state or snapshot. Can't say much else with the info given.

Before we go too far down this path, did you try simply clicking the "Force Unmount" button on the error dialog?

Otherwise :-
Back up the VM before doing anything.
If you have a saved state: discard it. If you are using snapshots, discard them or clone the VM current state, which also results in a snapshot free VM.

The nuclear option is to go to the Storage section and remove the CD/DVD drive from the disk controller, then start the guest.

Yes i've tried the Force unmount button, without any effect.

So i've deleted the CD/DVD drive, and start the guest. When i click on Installation additions, an error message ask me to manually create the CD/DVD drive.
So i've shutdowned the guest, and then, created an empty CD/DVD.
After that, i've restarted the guest. When i first click on install additions, nothing appened on the guest, but i see a VBoxGuestAdditions.iso loaded in my CD/DVD drive (on VirtualBox configuration).
On second click on install addictions, i have the famous error :(

If you see the ISO in the CD/DVD drive, then all is fine. Run the installer from within the guest now then, from the virtual CD/DVD drive.
Clicking a second time on the menu item will only tell you that the drive is already in use and locked by the guest - you already added the ISO to the drive!
