Virtual Machine black screen after upgrade to ubuntu 13.10

Post by greenman »

Running VBox on Windows 7 Pro with Ubuntu client.

I foolishly allowed a dev vm to upgrade to ubuntu saucy salamander 13.10 from 13.04.
Now when I attempt to access the box, I get a screen that looks like everything is loading properly and then a blank screen with a blinking cursor sans prompt in the top left corner of a black screen.
I've already looked around online and have been unable to find an existing recipe for fixing this kind of thing.
When I hold down shift during boot up, I can get to the grub advanced options, but I don't know where to go from here.
Nothing I do will bring up a regular desktop.
I'd be grateful some help recovering this vm.

(Can't post an image due to spambot stopper, since this is my first post.)

At first glance, I don't see something wrong, but I rarely use Virtualbox for desktop purposes. I will let other that have more experience with this check this also.

Maybe your problem isn't related to virtualbox rather to Ubuntu?

Did you read this? (I'm new user so I can't post urls. Search it in google. You will find pages on askubuntu)

and

maybe try nomodeset at first (for example I have to use it every time when I'm installing Ubuntu from scratch on my PC)

Thank you for your replies.
I thought about going to the other forum, but I suspect it's got to do with virtualbox.

I tried this:
1. Couldn't edit grub because machine mounts in read-only from advanced root.
2.

Code: Select all

sudo omount -o remount, rw '/'
# remount the main system so it's read/writable.
3.

Code: Select all

sudo nano -w etc/default/grub
4. replace

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
with:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
5. Control X to save the file.
6.

Code: Select all

sudo update grub
7. /user/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 237: /user/sbin/grub-mkconfig: cannot create /boot/grub/grub.cfg.new: Directory nonexistent
8.

Code: Select all

mkdir/boot/grub
9.

Code: Select all

sudo update grub
10. Generating grub.cfg ... Done

No dice. This is based on these three threads in the ubuntu forum:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/47538/ho ... m-writable
http://askubuntu.com/questions/286062/u ... idia-gefor
http://askubuntu.com/questions/289926/u ... ack-screen

Still at a loss. I'd really rather not lose the data.

I had the same problem, but now have a gui back.

Quite a few erorrs appearing on login as well. Also when going full screen it seems to be defaulting to the screensize of my laptop rather than my secondary screen where it is running. I am running VirtualBox 4.3.0. Didnt have this problem on 4.2.16.

To get the gui back I did this after logging in (VM started with guest additions as cdrom):

sudo mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom/
sudo su -
cp -r /cdrom .
cd cdrom/
./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
reboot

Not sure why I have to copy the cdrom contents, but the scripts wont run any other way for me. Also, I replaced guest additions 4.3.0 with 4.3.0!

Hope this helps

Update:
Errors were only on first boot. Second boot was fine and showed the new background image.
Still have the full screen problem, but using host+F does the same thing and works so I will use that instead for now.

You are a life saver! This worked. I can access the vbox now.
My shared folders became unaccessable and my network went off line, but these were easily manageable.
I'm so glad not to have totally lost all my work.

Thank you.

Try to re-install guest additions like this (this worked for me):

Code: Select all

HOST-F1 to get a vt
log in as root
Devices->Install Guest Additions (HOST+D might work also)
mount -o ro /dev/disk/by-label/VBOXADDITIONS* /mnt
cd /mnt
./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run --nox11
shutdown -r now

I have the same problem - upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 on a Windows 7 host (both 64 bit, VB 4.2.18) and can't get lightdm to work. Unfortunately, the fix of copying and running Guest Additions didn't work for me. Log file is attached. Any help would be much appreciated!

I have other problem with 13.10 and virtualbox 4.3 (using the old 4.2.18 everything runs fine). If it is a bug to report?

When using 4.3, I cannot power off the system, I receive the message:
Stopping VIrtualBox kernel modules unregister_netdevice: waiting for vboxnet0 to become free. Usage count = 1

Then every 10 second:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for vboxnet0 to become free. Usage count = 1

And happens nothing...
