Host USB and Shutdown problem

Post by PGootsch »

Hi,

on my new computer (Windows 7 64bit) I have problems with USB memory sticks and shutdown sometimes. The sticks are not detected and I cannot release them from the system anymore. Shutdown of Windows fails and hangs up in the shutdown screen.

Now I figured out, these problems occure only when I started Virtual Box, which I got in Version 4.2.18 r88780. Before starting Virtual Box, everything is fine and I can plug and unplug USB devices without problems. After starting VB, the sticks are not reckognized any more. There is no need to start a Virtual Machine, I just need to start the VB Manager to get to this state. Closing the manager does not help, I can never use USB sticks again until i reboot, which does not work properly.

Anyone got this problem and knows the solution?

Thx,
Patrick

I expect it might mean that a VM grabs the memory stick. Once that happens ownership is usually not returned to the host, but they are still present in the port: perhaps that confuses the host on shutdown.

I would suggest making sure that any USB filters configured in the guest do not match devices you don't intend to grab. That or disable USB support in the guest entirely. And plug/replug the USB device used after the VM is shut down.

I also thought about a problem with my only Guest System (a fedora 19 64bit) but then I disabled USB support for this VM and the problem still exists.

As I already posted "I just need to start the VB Manager to get to this state", meaning that I only start the Manager. I don't start any VM, don't use USB.

Sorry, have to edit this:

- Boot Host
- USB memory sticks work (and if I perform a shutdown at this point, shutdown ist successful)
- Start VB Manager (no guest is started)
- Stop VB Manager

- Unmount USB works
- Take USB after windows allows it
- Remount USB works
- USB still works

- Start VB Manager
- Unmount USB stick does not work (from this point on it does not work any more. I'm not 'allowed' to dismount, take away or put in a new stick whilt the VM Virtualbox Manager is running)
- optional: stop VB Manager
- USB does not work, shutdown fails

Does this happen for any type of devices you plug in?
