Ubuntu VM on Win7 host, stuck loading

Logs attached, seems to stop at loading audio drivers. If I disable audio drivers (because I don't need them) I can boot a little further, but get stuck at network drivers. I need my network drivers, so I'm not going to disable those. Ubuntu live CD seems to boot fine, and Ubuntu can boot into recovery mode but X doesn't start. I have a complex setup for work, so I can't just reinstall Ubuntu and copy my home folder. I can't back track to the exact problem, I kept the VM and Win running for 2-3 weeks straight, non stop. Help, pretty please?

What have you tried to do when you were in the recovery console?
Sounds like you have a corrupt package in Ubuntu. Can I assume you know what to do in Linux when things like this happen as I don't see this as a VirtualBox issue at all.

ran fschk, checked for broken packages with dkpg (some were repaired), ran clean up which removed some packages as well. It's been a while since I've bricked a linux system, to be honest I've forgotten how to recover them.

Drop to a # and run apt-get -f install and see if it finds issues then do an update & dist-upgrade and reboot. If it still has issues drop to the recovery console and remove the guest additions and install them again. Watch for and record any errors along the way.
Note: I removed your cross post. This is where you need to be.

If I choose the drop to root shell prompt and run
apt-get -f install if gives me the following warning and errors:
Code: Select all
W: Not using locking for ready only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I assume this is because recovery mounts the partitions as read-only by default.
If I resume the boot up, I boot to tty, and
sudod apt-get -f install says:
Code: Select all
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove, and 0 not upgraded.
I don't know how to remove the guest additions from prompt. Mounted the VBox Additions through Devices > Install vbox additions menu on the vm. The .run script says it uninstalls and installs, but there's a couple lines that may/may not matter:
Code: Select all
Installing the Window System drivers ...fail!
(Could not find the X[dot]Org or XFree86 Window System.)
Could this because X11 isn't running?
Anyhow I rebooted after this, and I've attached the log, had to split it to dodge the 128kb file size limit. Doesn't look like anything changed.

You need to ask the Ubuntu forum how to fix this. I had an update yesterday that trashed my 12.04 and had to reload it.
